Mario Baracchi

Mario Baracchi

Mario is standing outside his shop holding a vintage Leica IIIC camera. Mario has worked at Umberto Dei Ottica Fotografia since 1943, when he became an apprentice. He purchased the shop in 1966 and is now 85 years old. Mario makes lenses and performs repairs on optical equipment. On the wall is a certificate from the mayor proclaiming his shop as the oldest in Florence. Mario told stories of when he was about 16 during the German occupation of "44. He was crossing the bridge to see if his aunt was still alive after a bombing and stepped on a land mind. His friend with him was killed. What drew my attention to the shop was Mario's antique camera collection displayed in the window.
